Your company must comply with the OHS Act. If it doesn’t you could face fines and even two years in jail.

To ensure you avoid this and comply with the Act you need to assess your company’s compliance. The best way to do this is through health and safety audits.

These help you gather information about your company’s health and safety programme to determine if it’s compliant.

When you do the audit you must focus your attention on specific compliance areas. Here are four of them you need to monitor…

Assess these four health and safety compliance areas during your audit

1. Health and safety training
You need to gather information about your employees’ health and safety training. The best way to do this is to inspect your training registers and certificates and to interview your employees.
This will help you see who needs training or who needs more training because their knowledge is lacking.
2. Health and safety documents
You must inspect your health and safety documents to ensure you have everything you need. This is important because if a DoL inspector visits your workplace he’ll inspect your documents too.

Are you complying with the entire OHS Act and 19 Regulations?
Are you 100% compliant? How can you be sure?

3. Risk assessment
If you can see your safety equipment is ineffective it could be because you didn’t do a risk assessment, or you did it badly.
4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Watch the way your employees work to see if they use their PPE correctly. Also assess whether the PPE they have is effective and risk specific.
If you spot problems in any of these areas, you must fix them A.S.A.P. If you don’t you’re at risk of getting into serious trouble with the DoL.
Do your health and safety audit as soon as possible to find and fix any non-compliance problems in your workplace.
