What is a health and safety audit?

In this article, we explained that a health and safety audit is a process that confirms and validates your compliance.

Here’s an example of a safety audit

Let’s say you have a standard operating procedure or policy that states you’ll do monthly formal inspections of your workplace. The auditor reads your document and asks you for your inspection documents.

The auditor compares your inspection dates with the standard/policy. This confirms that you’re doing what you say you’re doing. This means you’ve successfully proven your company’s compliance.

When you conduct a safety audit in your workplace, you must follow these three steps.

Three steps to conduct a health and safety audit

Step #1: Use a group of questions to answer in a particular sequence

The Health & Safety Advisor says you’ll base your audit questions on an audit protocol designed by your auditors.

This is the document compliance part of the audit. The auditor will take a sample of one of the inspections and then do a functional compliance in your workplace with your employees.

Step #2: Write an audit report

The report must list all the issues that received a “no” answer. These are called “audit findings”. The report is dependent on your protocol and how you’ve written it.

Step #3: Develop an action plan

You need to act on your audit findings. So develop an action plan so you can take corrective measures.

Now that you know what a health and safety audit is and the three steps you need to follow to conduct it, make sure you comply.
