You’re responsible for the health and safety of your employees. You must buy all the PPE and safety equipment and provide their training.

But when it comes to risk assessment, do you know who must take charge. You know someone must do the assessment, but who?

When it comes to risk assessment, the buck stops with you

Health and safety is your responsibility and that means every part of it. So when it comes to risk assessment, you take the lead.
You need to know what risks your employees face so you can provide the risk safety precautions. It’s not enough to read someone else’s report, because that won’t give you true understanding of your company’s risk levels.
You need to see it with your own eyes because you know what training your employees have or need and you’ll understand why those risks are there better than an outside inspector will.
But don’t panic, you don’t have to go it alone. There’s another person you must also involve in your risk assessments…

Your health and safety representative must always be part of your risk assessment

According to the Health and Safety Advisor, always involve your health and safety representative in your risk assessment. He sees what your employees deal with on a daily basis. This input could be the difference between failure and success.
So if you want to have an effective risk management plan it must start with you, your health and safety rep and a risk assessment. Otherwise, your risk management will never work.
